Outline
This talk will review issues particular to mental health care provision in Japan. Mental health remains a highly stigmatized issue amongst Japanese and mental health care lags behind treatment for physical illness. Japan has extremely high numbers of inpatient psychiatric beds and long hospital stays which are primarily custodial. Social factors in Japan also contribute to various culture specific disorders such as hikimori and high rates of suicide. This talk will review current challenges within the system as well as current efforts at reform combined with resource constraints which may limit the reform efforts.
