Suicide Prevention: A Community-based Approach

Over 1 million people worldwide take their own lives each year. However, saving lives is something we can all do.

TELL (Tokyo English Life Line) is hoping to spread awareness of suicide and ways to help prevent it with diverse activities organized for WORLD SUICIDE PREVENTION DAY on September 10th. The event will focus public attention on the unacceptable burden and costs of suicide by educating and involving the community in taking an active role in its prevention.

Tackling Suicide from a Community Perspective
Saturday, September 10th, Wesley Center Rm. 204, Minami Aoyama

    3:00pm ~ 4:30pm:  Documentary film presentation “Depression: Out of the Shadows”

    4:45pm ~ 5:30pm:  Tackling suicide from a community perspective with Vickie Skorji

    5:45pm ~ 6:30pm:  Economy and other depression triggers with Dr. Rene Duignan

    7:00pm:  Suicide remembrance candle lighting
    If you’ve ever lost someone to suicide, or if you want to help us raise awareness of its global
    repercussions, join us as we light a candle in remembrance of those who have died.
    Don’t forget to bring a candle!

TELL believes that saving lives is something we can all do and will be providing the following training opportunities that offer practical skills to support someone in need:

Suicide Prevention Workshop for Adults
    Thursday, September 15th • 6:30pm ~ 9:30pm • Wesley Center, Rm. 204

Suicide Prevention Workshop for Teachers
    Wednesday, October 19th • 6:30pm ~ 9: 30pm • Wesley Center, Rm. 204

Telephone Counselor Training Program
A comprehensive training program teaching non-directive counseling and emotional support on a broad range of issues, including suicide. The Fall evening training runs from September 17th until December 3rd. Prior experience is not required.
